The Associate will provide administrative and clerical assistance to the Women’s Rights Division including, but not limited to:

• maintaining extensive files, contact lists and databases; 
• maintaining communication among HRW’s domestic and international offices and providing substantive, logistical and administrative assistance to field offices; 
• retrieving and responding to requests for information; 
• preparing, formatting and distributing documents such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op-eds, publications and web content; 
• assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires and translations; 
• preparing for and taking minutes at meetings; 
• assisting with advisory committee matters; 
• assisting with special events, hiring and training; 
• drafting and editing correspondence and other documents; 
• assisting with travel arrangements and follow-up; 
• recruiting and coordinating interns; 
• recording departmental finances; 
• word processing; 
• photocopying; 
• filing; 
• faxing; 
• answering phones; 
• processing incoming mail; and other assigned tasks.

S/he will be based in HRW’s Johannesburg, Nairobi or Berlin office. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will take up this position in January 2011.

The ideal candidate must be self motivated, extremely well-organized, collegial, able to function under pressure and handle numerous tasks simultaneously. The successful candidate must be willing to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently, as well as function as a member of a team. The candidate must have solid office/administration experience, demonstrated organizational skills and excellent computer skills. Outstanding communications skills in both oral and written English are essential; proficiency in another language is desirable. Applicants for this position must possess current work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from the start date.

Computer programmer/IT specialists (Potchefstroom/Klerksdorp)

• Position entails programming, database set-up and management, in-house scripting, graphical user interfaces etc.
• Expert level proficiency in JAVA, Linux. 
• Strong mathematical, physics and/or applied mathematics would be advantageous.
• Proficiency in Python programming would be advantageous.

Numerical modelling assistant (Potchefstroom/Klerksdorp)

• B.Sc or B.Sc Hons with applied mathematics, and/or physics and/or mathematics.
• Strong analytical skills. Ability to work on your own. 
• Position entails building of numerical models for stress analysis of mining and civil engineering problems on consultancy projects. Training will be provided in software. Software is CAD based with graphical user interfaces.



Strata control officer (Klerksdorp)

• Position entails an exciting opportunity for a graduate to further him/her in the field of rock engineering.
• Rock engineering is the field in which the influence of mining on stress and strain in an orebody is studied. The discipline also entails designing of excavations. 
• A major shortage of practitioners is experienced currently and this is the ideal time for an interested person to enter this exiting field. 
• B.Sc geology degree required.
• Training will be provided
